Vigan City Food Trip: Food Experiences to Try at Ilocos Sur’s Historic City
A trip to Vigan City is not only a journey through history but also a feast for the senses. Known as one of the best-preserved Spanish colonial cities in Asia, Vigan is also home to some of the most iconic and flavorful dishes in Filipino cuisine. During our spontaneous anniversary trip through Northern Luzon, we found ourselves exploring the charming streets of Vigan and indulging in unforgettable Ilocano food experiences.
No visit to Vigan is complete without trying the city’s famous bagnet, a crispy deep-fried pork belly that perfectly pairs with sukang Iloko and traditional condiments. We also enjoyed authentic Vigan longganisa, known for its garlicky and slightly sour flavor, and the beloved Vigan empanada, a crunchy rice-flour pastry stuffed with vegetables, egg, and sausage.
Beyond traditional favorites, Vigan also surprised us with modern takes on Ilocano cuisine. At Kusina Felicitas, we discovered creative dishes like Poqui-Poqui Balls, while cafes such as 1995 Studio Cafe offered delicious desserts including their unforgettable Sans Rival cake. We also enjoyed comforting bowls of Sinanglao, a flavorful Ilocano soup made with beef innards, at the famous First Sinanglaoan.
For snacks and pasalubong, Tongson’s Royal Bibingka served soft and chewy royal bibingka that instantly became one of our favorite rice cakes. Meanwhile, Cafe Leona introduced us to Vigan-style pizzas topped with local ingredients like Vigan longganisa and pinakbet vegetables.
From heritage restaurants and hidden garden dining spots to craft breweries and street food stalls, Vigan City proves that it is a true foodie destination in the Philippines. Whether you are a fan of traditional Filipino dishes or adventurous culinary experiences, Vigan offers flavors that are comforting, unique, and deeply rooted in Ilocano culture.
